Why does Google Maps drain a phone’s battery?
It drains the battery because you are using your processor, GPS, location services, your display and the Google Maps app. Your display uses the most power closely followed by the processor.
Google maps (when in routing mode) leaves the screen on all the time, constantly updating. That's the single biggest drain - save power by turning it off an only using voice directions, or moving it to the background.
The second is GPS itself. It takes a fair bit of computing power to calculate your location based on the GPS signals. And it's doing that every second or so - you can feel the device get warm - that's sheer computing power turning into heat. On top of that, by default Android uses mobile and WiFi data to determine approximate location, so they are both on an active too.
Actually GPS module consume more battery. GPS module is use inside phone for location tracking. When you use google maps that time GPS module continuously communicates with google MAP server for showing you your exact location. Its a main reason of battery consumption during use of google map.
How can phone battery drain be minimized while using Google Maps?
- use offline maps, download the maps to your phone before making your trip.
- turn off 4G while you're driving, this will save power and forces Google Maps to use the offline maps. Without 4G, you won’t be getting traffic updates though.
- Dim your screen or turn it off entirely and follow the direction via voice only.
- If I'm not mistaken, I think there is a lighter version of Google Maps that use less power, you can try using that instead.
You can not do much to conserve battery but downloading the map of the area your using would help a little and make sure you do not have other apps running in the background also helps. You can use “Medium power-saving mode” if your phone has it as Maps will still work at that setting when it is open and you have downloaded the map you need.
Better to get a car charger or a power bank to use when you are using Google maps to navigate with.
