Apple develops 5G Modem target 2023 to be applied to iPhone
The analysts Blayne Curtis and Thomas O’Malley of the investment bank Barclays wrote a report earlier, stating that Apple’s self-designed 5G Modem is expected to be released in 2023 and applied to all iPhones.
Two analysts believe that chip makers Qorvo and Broadcom are expected to benefit from Apple's switch to its own modem solution.
Barclays analysts pointed out that the 5G Modem being developed by Apple will support both Sub-6GHz and mmWave frequency bands.
Both Mark Sullivan of Fast Company and Mark Gurman of Bloomberg have written articles saying that Apple is developing its own modem for future iPhone models. It is pointed out that after Apple acquired Intel's smartphone modem business in mid-2019, it began to develop its own modem last year.
Earlier, Apple announced that it will set up a European chip design center in Munich, Germany, and will invest 1 billion euros in the next three years to hire hundreds of related personnel to develop mobile communications and wireless technologies including 5G.
If the analyst's statement comes true, Apple is expected to get rid of Qualcomm in 2023 and no longer use the other's Snapdragon X-series 5G Modem chips.
