Bloomberg: PS5 will open built-in SSD expansion to solve the problem of insufficient capacity
According to a Bloomberg report, Sony will launch an update to the PS5 version this summer, which will lift the built-in M.2 slot expansion restriction, allowing players to install SSDs to upgrade their storage space.
When the PS5 was launched, it was said that the expansion of M.2 SSD would not be opened until the compatibility test was completed. Although the PS5 has 825 GB of built-in storage, the actual available capacity is only 667 GB.
If the SSD cannot be installed, the capacity will be It is very easy to fall short. After all, current games such as "Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales" account for 105 GB, and "Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War" account for 133 GB.
Almost half of the capacity has been used to install the two games. But with the update of the version, players will be able to solve the problem of insufficient capacity by installing an SSD.
But Mark Cerny, the chief designer of the PS5 system architecture, mentioned that players must use PCIe 4.0 SSDs that meet the specifications, and the access rate must reach 5.5 GB per second.
The heat sink must not be too large, and the overall size and thickness must be compatible with the expansion slot. Design, and compatible with PS5 I/O controller and other conditions.
Bloomberg also pointed out that as hardware upgrades will increase the difficulty of heat dissipation, in future version updates, Sony will also increase the fan speed to avoid the problem of overheating the host due to the addition of SSDs.
